MATATO Celebrates Chinese Lunar New Year with a Cultural Tribute Through Maldivian Lacquer Work
MATATO – the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators – has extended warm greetings to all partners and friends celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year, marking the occasion with a unique design that reflects both Maldivian heritage and Chinese cultural symbolism.
This year’s greeting features the Horse, the zodiac symbol of the season, creatively inspired by the vibrant artistry of Maldivian Lacquer Work (Laajehun) — one of the Maldives’ most treasured traditional crafts.

The Horse, widely recognized in Chinese culture as a symbol of strength, determination, progress, and prosperity, reflects the forward momentum that both nations continue to build through growing tourism and people-to-people connections.
MATATO noted that the creative concept behind the greeting represents more than celebration—it symbolizes the strong relationship between the Maldives and the Chinese market, which remains one of the most significant contributors to Maldivian tourism.
Through this tribute, MATATO also reinforces the importance of cultural storytelling in tourism promotion, emphasizing that meaningful connections are created when destinations celebrate not only travel experiences but also heritage and identity.
As the Maldives continues to strengthen ties with international markets, MATATO remains committed to supporting sustainable tourism development, empowering local travel operators, and building stronger global partnerships.
The association concluded by wishing all partners a joyful and prosperous Lunar New Year, expressing optimism for continued collaboration and growth in the year ahead.
新年快乐!恭喜发财!
Happy Chinese Lunar New Year from MATATO.
